David Sheldon
David started his choral career early commencing singing training at the age of six. He joined his first formal choir at the church in his home village of Grenoside in the West Riding. His public debut with the choir was on Easter Sunday, 1945. David continued singing in church choirs until the age of fourteen when due to the family moving he was forced to give up the choir. When the family returned to Grenoside and David having mastered his now broken voice, he was invited to join the festival winning Grenoside Male Voice Choir. He accepted the invitation and was with them for eighteen years. For eight of those he also held the office of Secretary. During his busy musical career David also took piano lessons. While the lessons didn’t produce a concert pianist they did add to David’s skill and knowledge of written music and its interpretation. David moved to Humnanby in 2005. He still enjoyed his singing and was looking for a choir to join. He heard of the Filey Fishermen’s Choir but was advised against joining by a fellow Grenoside member because “they only sing hymns”. David of course, having started out his singing career, “only singing hymns” ignored this advice and in 2006 joined the choir. His musical knowledge and experience became quickly apparent and it wasn’t long before he was asked to deputise for the choir conductor. Despite not having any previous experience of conducting his knowledge and skills were quickly apparent and when the position of Choir Conductor became available at the beginning of 2010 he was asked to take it. David accepted and the Filey Fishermen’s Choir now enjoy the benefits of his talents and many years of experience.
