Peter Jackson.

Peter started his musical career at the age of 7yrs. when he started taking piano lessons. He took to it like a duck to water and by the age of 12yrs. he was playing the organ at Newby Hall Church. He was progressing through his Royal School of Music qualifications and by the age of 14yrs he had become the church organist at Borough Bridge Parish Church. Over the ensuing years he played in a number of churches in the area and for a time took organ lessons at St Peter’s Church at Harrogate.

The pressures of adulthood and work took over and he finally had to give up his playing at the age of 25yrs. He didn’t get back to it until 2001. He had heard the Filey Fishermen’s Choir sing at Halifax on one occasion and was impressed so, when he moved to Filey he went to listen to them at St. Oswald’s Church. On this occasion he was not as impressed and voiced his opinions only to be told. “If you think you can do any better why not join us?”  After a while he did in fact join the choir as a singer. He was soon persuaded to brush up on his organ playing and quickly became the Deputy Organist playing for rehearsals and accompanying the choir at venues the organist was unable to attend.

When the choir’s last conductor had to give up due to ill health Peter filled the breach as a temporary measure. His musical skills and experience became quickly apparent and this, coupled with his natural flair as a conductor soon established his position as permanent conductor.
